There’s something special about transforming a house into a home. The goal of this project was to create a 'forever home' for the customer and his family. David, the homeowner and a skilled Joiner & Carpenter, oversaw the entire project, coordinating the different elements and creating the structure for a beautiful home – including a dedicated ‘whiskey room.’

Like most projects, we started with a detailed site survey alongside David, the builders, and myself. It quickly became clear that breaking the project into phases would allow it to run smoothly. We agreed on three phases, each with its own delivery:

• External Steelwork – Goalpost and portal frame
• Ridge & Roof Picture Frame Steel
• Connecting Steel – Portal Frame Ridge to Picture Frame
  
  

By working this way, we ensured that each measurement was accurate and avoided overwhelming the builder and site with large steel pieces.

We were particularly impressed with the speed at which David and the builders worked. The one potentially hazardous area was the apex of the portal frame, due to its height. To improve safety and ease handling, we fabricated the apex of the steel frame in separate parts, so it could be assembled in three pieces rather than as one large, heavy frame.

This was a fantastic project to be part of. A combination of solid planning, great communication, and excellent on-site work made it an extremely satisfying project.

Mardan Removals has recently expanded their storage solutions by adding an additional level of containers, effectively doubling their capacity. To facilitate access to these new units, a custom staircase was crafted using robust mild steel. The design features durbar-patterned treads and a platform, complemented by flat plate stringers and a straightforward box section for the handrail and balustrade.

The staircase is notably wider than standard designs, specifically to accommodate the transfer of large, bulky items in and out of the storage containers. This thoughtful dimensioning ensures ease of movement and enhances operational efficiency. Additionally, the robust box section handrail and the durbar treads add an element of industrial chic to the structure, while the galvanized finish not only adds a shimmering aesthetic but also provides long-lasting protection against the elements. This combination of practical design and industrial style makes the staircase a significant addition to Mardan Removals' facility.

 Initially, this project started off quite basic but quickly evolved and progressed. It's fair to say that it was somewhat over-engineered, as the steel was primarily used to create a walkway and platform.

Nonetheless, the combination of box section steel and circular hollow posts, complete with several angled stubs, made this a challenging fabrication job. The team excelled, ensuring that the steelwork fit together effortlessly on-site, which contributed to the beautifully finished project. It's just a shame that the steel was then covered, never to be seen again.

Since the underside of the platform remained exposed, all steel needed to be hot-dip galvanized. This always introduces a level of complexity because it's difficult to make any adjustments on-site.

Reflecting on a project from last summer, we handled the supply and delivery of gigantic steel beams to support the rear of a large house in Bristol. The header beam, weighing a hefty 118 kg per meter, spanned 8 meters with a slight crank at one end, flanked by two large columns.

It quickly became apparent that handling these beams would exceed our capacity. Consequently, Pete collaborated with our local steel supplier, South West Steel Supplies, to source and deliver the beams from their partner, MJ Patch. We provided the measurements and drawings, and they delivered the fabricated steel beam.

The installation required more than mere muscle. We organized specialist installation and lifting equipment and personnel from 'Steel Beam Lifter' to smoothly deliver the beam to the site and hoist it into position.

Beams of this magnitude demand meticulous planning and attention. Utilizing specialist lifting equipment and personnel turned this task into a breeze. At Chilcott Metal Products, we recognize our expertise and limitations and will not hesitate to bring in the 'big boys' when it ensures a project’s safe, timely, and cost-effective completion.

Just outside Bristol in the quaint area of Hewish, our team recently had the opportunity to enhance an agricultural sales business, Michael Burdge LTD, with a custom steel staircase. As they expanded their office space within a steel-framed agricultural building, the need for a staircase that blended industrial functionality with sleek, contemporary aesthetics was paramount.

At Chilcott Metal Products, we specialize in the design and installation of access-driven steel staircases. For this project, we utilized a robust folded durbar tread and platform system, paired with a flat plate stringer. To shift from an external appearance to one that seamlessly integrates into an interior setting, we added a powder coating finish. This not only enhanced the staircase's durability but also its visual appeal, aligning perfectly with the interior's modern vibe.

The staircase was complemented by a minimalist balustrade, featuring a flat plate handrail, box section steel posts, and vertical solid bar spindles, which collectively underscored the clean, modern design.

One of the main challenges we faced was the project’s tight timeline. It was crucial to complete the installation swiftly to allow other trades to proceed with the final decorative touches. Proudly, we managed to supply and install the staircase in approximately 5 weeks, demonstrating our commitment to efficiency and quality in steel staircase solutions.

Flashback to October when we actually saw the sun. We supplied and installed the steelwork for a large flat roof extension near the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

The rear wall, at 500mm thick, was supported by three beams back-to-back. It took two genies, a fair bit of sweat and muscle, and a moderate amount of shouting, but we got the job done. Once that goalpost frame was installed, the external steel went up fairly easily.

When you're working with existing buildings and the potential unknowns they bring, it can be wise to break down the job into phases. Not all steel needs to be measured and delivered in one go. We always work alongside the builder or contractor to help create a manageable plan, even if it requires multiple drops.
